Advanced Apprenticeships • Details
Eligibility

An Advanced Apprenticeship is the most appropriate qualification for motivated young people who have completed an Apprenticeship or further education and have some experience in a particular occupation that wish to build on while learning & working. Most young people aged 16-24 are eligible for Apprenticeships although it should be noted that the priority for Government funding lies with those aged under 19.

Timescales

An Advanced Apprenticeship can begin at any time of year although if the training is based on college courses this aspect of the programme may only start in September or at the beginning of the January or after Easter. There is no set time to complete an Advanced Apprenticeship as they vary widely in size according to the occupation and will depend on the ability of the advanced apprentice and the employer’s requirements but as a guide it usually takes between 2 and 4 years depending on the industry .

Commitments

  • All employers training an Advanced Apprentice must complete a Heath and Safety check before they can take part to ensure that the young person will be safe.
  • Employers are expected to support the training programme by providing structured training at work and releasing the Advanced Apprentice for any activities away from work – this will lead to the benefits for the business as the Advanced Apprentice becomes more skilled and valuable.
  • To pay the Advanced Apprentice at a reasonable market rate but not less than £95 per week. ( from August 09 )
  • To employ the Advanced Apprentice at the start and throughout their training

Costs

To pay the Advanced Apprentice at least £95 per week ( from August 09 )
There may be a charge made by the training organisation depending on the level of Government funding available. Charges are more likely for Advanced Apprentices as they are more likely to be aged over 19 years old when they start and therefore attract lower subsidies to cover the costs of training.

Progression Routes

As an Advanced Apprenticeship is for an employee the natural progression route is within the company where they are already employed – possibly moving onto further work based training or a Foundation Degree.
