Apprenticeships • Details
Eligibility

An Apprenticeship is the most appropriate qualification for motivated young people with little or no experience in a particular occupation that wish to learn while working. Most young people aged 16-24 are eligible for Apprenticeships although it should be noted that the priority for Government funding lies with those aged under 19.

Timescales

An Apprenticeship can begin at any time of year although if the Apprenticeship training is based on college courses this aspect of the programme may only start in September or at the beginning of the January or after Easter. There is no set time to complete an Apprenticeship as they vary widely in size according to the occupation and will depend on the ability of the apprentice and the employer’s requirements but as a guide it usually takes between 2 and 4 years depending on the industry.

Commitments

  • All employers training an Apprentice must complete a Heath and Safety check before they can take part to ensure that the Apprentice will be safe.
  • Employers are expected to support the training programme by providing structured training at work and releasing the Apprentice for any activities away from work – this will lead to the benefits for the business as the Apprentice becomes more skilled and valuable.
  • To pay the Apprentice at a reasonable market rate but not less than £95 per week. (from August 09)
  • To employ the Apprentice at the start and throughout their training

Costs

To pay the Apprentice at least £95 per week ( from August 09 )
There may be a charge made by the training organisation depending on the level of Government funding available. Charges are more likely when your Apprentice is over 19 years old when they start their Apprenticeship.

Progression Routes

As an Apprenticeship is for an employee the natural progression route is within the company where they are already employed – possibly moving onto the next level an Advanced Apprenticeship.
