Sussex Careers is the organisation that offers career help and advice to people of all ages across East Sussex and Brighton and Hove. The organisation believes in practising what it preaches in offering young people the chance to train as apprentices throughout its network of offices. This fits the company’s mission to advise and develop young people as well as making sound business sense.

One example of a successful apprentice is Ali Weaver (19) who will be supported by Sussex Careers to achieve a Level 2 NVQ in Business Administration over the next 12 – 14 months. Taking part in the apprenticeship scheme has given Ali an invaluable start in the world of employment and means that she is paid as she gains training and experience of work.

By taking on apprentices, Sussex Careers is actively encouraging businesses to consider this scheme when seeking new staff. Susan Santos, Deputy Operations Manager – Systems and Resources at Sussex Careers, said “By taking on an apprentice, companies are able to develop and train new staff with the skills that a successful business needs. In addition, organisations can make a positive contribution to addressing skill gaps.”

Apprenticeships highlight a growing trend for alternative routes into employment, recognising that traditional education is not the best option for everyone.
